The current Ford lineup is full of some all out great cars. We’ll focus on two highlights in the lineup; The Fusion, with its charming looks, roomy cabin, (and it was even named a best car for recent college graduates by Autotrader), and the Escape, the powerful and athletic SUV. But lets say you’re in the market for something pre-owned. A newer vehicle comes with some advantages, but the used market provides some very affordable alternatives. No, we don’t mean those “buy here, pay here” places, we mean Certified Pre-Owned vehicles.
Did you know that you can buy a used car with a factory warranty, roadside assistance, and low APR financing rates? The Certified Pre-Owned program adds these features and many more. Now, most manufacturers today offer a form of this program, but they are not all the same.
Ford’s Certified Pre-Owned program is available on all used Ford models, but they have to adhere to a strict criteria. First, the vehicle has to be a Ford that is no more than 6 years old, and with no more than 80,000 miles on the odometer. After that, the vehicle then goes through a rigorous 172-point inspection to ensure its quality and condition. If the vehicle passes all of these tests it can officially become a Ford Certified Pre-Owned car. With this certification the vehicle includes;
- Vehicle History Report
- 7-year/100,000-Mile Limited Powertrain Warranty Coverage
- 12-Month/12,000-Mile Comprehensive Warranty from time of purchase
- Certified Pre-owned warranty is transferable
- $100 deductible
- 24-hour Roadside Assistance
- Travel expense reimbursement of up to $500 per day for up to three days related to vehicle breakdown
- Rental car reimbursement of up to $30 per day for up to five days if the vehicle requires overnight mechanical repairs
- Destination expense assistance of up to $75 to cover the emergency cost of a taxi, shuttle or rental car to get you to your destination
- Lockout assistance of up to $50 to unlock vehicle doors
- Fuel delivery if the vehicle runs out of fuel – up to 2 gallons at no charge
- Low APR Financing
Like we mentioned before, not all CPO programs are similar. Some word theirs a bit different, which seems a bit unfair because in reality you get less. Ford’s CPO program offers all of these great perks as standard, but lets see how the competition differs.
Lets check out one of the Escape’s direct competitors, the Honda CR-V. A CPO Honda comes with a similar 7-year/100,000 miles limited powertrain warranty and 12-month/12,000 mile from purchase date like the Escape, but that’s where the similarities stop. Honda only offers a 150-point inspection, strange for a car that offers similar equipment. Honda also provides roadside assistance like the Ford, but they do not offer breakdown reimbursement or cost of rental transportation. And no deductible is offered.
How about a Fusion competitor, the Nissan Altima. Nissan has a similar policy of less than 80,000 miles or less than 6 years old to be a CPO. They then put their vehicles through a 156-point inspection, less than Ford’s 172-point one. They also give it a 7-year/100,000 miles limited warranty from the original in-service date, not when you buy it. Separate service plans can be added to the warranty, but we’d imagine that is something that wouldn’t be cheap. A $50 deductible comes with the warranty, half of the amount of Ford’s deductible though. Roadside assistance with trip interruption coverage comes with it too.
Overall, these CPO programs offer some good benefits. Beneath all the similarities, each warranty covers something different. Some go the extra mile to get you more coverage, while some do the essentials to get a “Certified Pre-Owned”. Ford’s programs offer great warranty coverage, with convenience items that let you know Ford has your back, just in case something happens. Ford’s Certified Pre-Owned program takes out all of the risk and doubt that comes with buying a used vehicle. When buying a Ford CPO car, you know that mechanics have gone that extra mile to inspect everything to make sure it is a quality vehicle, and you get a vehicle that is backed by a manufacturer limited-warranty too. All while saving thousands over buying a new vehicle.
